Personally I preferred the historical sections to the story of Hadley, but I didn’t dislike those sections, enjoying the switch in mood and pace when she became the focus. I took my time reading it because I loved every page of it. It is beautifully written, with atmospheric descriptions and a strong sense of character. This story was one of those books that is quite a slow paced read but in a really good way. This is intertwined with the story of Hadley, who had a similarly difficult childhood, as she prepares for the role of Marian. The story itself spans many decades and focuses on Marian’s parents, her childhood, her troubled marriage and her early years as a pilot, culminating in her final journey: a flight to circumnavigate the globe, crossing over both the Arctic and Antarctic. The story focuses on two main characters: Marian Graves, a female pilot in the early twentieth century, and Hadley Baxter, the troubled young actress who is playing her in a film decades later. ![]() I won this paperback copy in a Twitter giveaway, which I was really pleased about as this was a book I really wanted to read.
